Painters Eleven – the other canadian artist group to know

Harold Town created a series of “prints” in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s called “Popsters and Celebrities”.  These are mostly size 20″ x 14″ or 14″ x 20″, all limited edition, signed prints of which he was meticulous in inspecting each one post printing.  Those that did not meet his eye were discarded and this is why the total print number of each print varies.  The prints are called “Popsters and Celebrities” which are separate from the drawings called, “Silent Stars, Sound Stars, Film Stars” of which there is a book titled the latter name.

Below are a couple examples from the print series.

Harold Town, 1966, “Chick Trying on a Dress”,  White Gouache & Rubber Resist on Black Paper,  25″ x 19.5″

The technique is to use rubber resist to create the subject then apply white gouache which would become the background.  Removing the rubber resist then leaves the negative black image showing via the black paper.  Harold Town was the most multidimensional artist of the group.
